Directive 10-289

Check out the below. Eerily topical wouldn't you say?

From the following blog: http://radio.weblogs.com/0104693/stories/2002/11/17/directive10289.html

Directive 10-289

This piece is from Atlas Shrugged, here is a little background.  At this point in the book much of the economy has collapsed due to government regulation and the teachings of the modern day.  These are a set of directives ordered in the hope of stabilizing the economy.  I'd like you to read this and as you go think as ruthlessly as you can and draw parallel's to today's world and the laws that are being passed every day by your representatives I think you'll find it interesting.

Directive 10-289

"In the name of the general welfare," read Wesley Mouch, "to protect the people's security, to achieve full equality and total stability, it is decreed for the duration of the national emergency that--

"Point One.  All workers, wage earners and employees of any kind whatsoever shall henceforth be attached to their jobs and shall not leave nor be dismissed nor change employment, under penalty of a term in jail.  The penalty shall be determined by the Unification Board, such Board to be appointed by the Bureau of Economic Planning and National Resources.  All persons reaching the age of twenty-one shall report to the Unification Board, which shall assign them to where, in its opinion, their services will best serve the interests of the nation.

"Point Two.  All industrial, commercial, manufacturing and business establishments of any nature whatsoever shall henceforth remain in operation, and the owners of such establishments shall not quit nor leave nor retire, nor close, sell or transfer their business, under pentalty of the nationalization of their establishment and of any and all of their property.

"Point Three.  All patents and copyrights, pertaining to any devices, inventions, formulas, processes and works of any nature whatsoever, shall be turned over to the nation as a patriotic emergency gift by means of Gift Certificates to be signed voluntarily by the owners of all such patents and copyrights.  The Unification Board shall then license the use of such patents and copyrights to all applicants, equally and without discrimination, for the purpose of eliminating monopolistic practices, discarding obsolete products and making the best available to the whole nation.  No trademarks, brand names or copyrighted titles shall be used.  Every formerly patented product shall be known by a new name and sold by all manufacturers under the same name, such name to be selected by the Unification Board.  All private trademarks and brand names are hereby abolished.

"Point Four.  No new devices, inventions, products, or goods of any nature whatsoever, not now on the market, shall be produced, invented, manufacturerd or sold afer the date of this directive.  The Office of Patents and Copyrights is hereby suspended.

"Point Five.  Every establishment, concern, corporation or person engaged in production of any nature whatsoever shall henceforth produce the same amount of goods per year as it, they or he produced during the Basic Year, no more and no less.  The year to be known as the Basic or Yardstick Year is to be the year ending on the date of this directive.  Over or under production shall be fined, such fines to be determined by the Unification Barod.

"Point Six.  Every person of any age, sex, class or income, shall henceforth spend the same amount of money on the purchase of goods per year as he or she spent during the Basic Year, no more and no less.  Over or under purchasing shall be fined, such fines to be determined by the Unification Board.

Mercury Found in Commercial Corn Syrup

(Many of you know my feelings about how High Fructose Corn Syrup and how it is adversely effecting the health of America. Here's more evidence to that belief. - HB)

Mercury Found in Commerical Corn Syrup

(Jan. 26) – Almost half of the corn syrup tested in a new study contained mercury, according to HealthDay News. And a third of commercial food products with corn syrup had mercury as well.
The studies focused on high-fructose corn syrup, known as HFCS, which is often produced using caustic soda that contains mercury, the news service reported.

One study, published in the Environmental Health journal, found detectable levels of mercury in nine out of 20 commercial HFCS samples.
The other study found that one of every three brand-name foods, out of 55 tested, included mercury, HeathDay News reported. The most common foods with mercury were dairy products, dressing and condiments.
"The bad news is that nobody knows whether or not their soda or snack food contains HFCS made from ingredients like caustic soda contaminated with mercury," said Dr. David Wallinga, of the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy, in HealthDay News. He co-authored both studies.
According to the Department of Health and Human Services, high levels of mercury can cause brain and liver damage. Short-term exposure to high levels of mercury can increase blood pressure and trigger rashes, eye irritation, nausea, vomiting and other health problems.
"Mercury is toxic in all its forms," Wallinga said, according to HealthDay News. "Given how much high-fructose corn syrup is consumed by children, it could be a significant additional source of mercury never before considered."

Lumpkin County: From Tourism To High Tech (Georgia Trend)

http://www.georgiatrend.com/our-state/01_09_lumpkin.shtml

(Here's an excerpt from the Georgia Trend story that we can definitely learn from.) - HB

“There are also our wineries,” Herring says. Five wineries have opened in Lumpkin County, one of which, Wolf Mountain Vineyards, produces Georgia’s first champagne. Another, Frogtown Cellars, was founded by a retiree living in the Achasta community.

“Because of our climate and slope of land, Lumpkin County has excellent conditions for growing grapes,” Herring says. “Our wineries do very well, and thrive on the wedding business. One winery is already booked for next season.” Lumpkin’s wineries host 30 to 40 weddings each over the four-month traditional wedding season. The busiest tourist season is fall, of course, but spring is becoming popular with visitors as well.

Wineries also have attracted a new brand of tourist to Dahlonega – visitors come up from Atlanta on weekends for the winery tours. “We’re starting to get the proof on paper that even though the economy has slowed, people will still drive a couple of hours to get away from it all, and they’re coming to Dahlonega,” Herring says.

Tourism is the major industry in Lumpkin County and the economic engine that sustains the area through sales tax and bed tax dollars, says Powers, who notes that hotel and B&B occupancy is actually up 9 percent over last year’s figures with the city bringing on some new properties and several B&Bs coming online.

“Liquor by the drink was passed last November in the county. We are hopeful that once the economy begins to improve, we can attract some boutique hotels to the Hwy. 16 and Ga. 400 corridor to keep visitors in Lumpkin County and produce more bed tax and sales tax dollars. This could serve as a hub for travelers who still want to explore the beautiful northeast Georgia Mountains,” he says.

Banishment For Ralston - But Not To Siberia

http://www.insideradvantagegeorgia.com/restricted/2009/January%2009/1-15-09/Ralston11519655.php

Banishment For Ralston - But Not To Siberia

(1/15/09) Rep. David Ralston, who set himself up for banishment to the legislative equivalent of Siberia last November with a failed challenge to House Speaker Glenn Richardson, has, indeed, lost his chairmanship of the House Judiciary (Non-Civil) Committee. But where he's going, instead, doesn't appear to be all that cold.

He got the No. 2 spot on the other judiciary committee, right behind Chairman Wendell Willard, and kept his positions as a member of Transportation and Appropriations. However, he did lose his membership on Rules.

The committee lists were made public last night.

In the decades when Democrat Tom Murphy was Speaker, his two unsuccessful challengers also endured a period of punishment. But the steps taken against Ralston seem far less severe at first glance, possibly in keeping with the new, more inclusive image Richardson is cultivating this year. Too, Ralston has made his peace with the man who wields the gavel.
