Banishment For Ralston - But Not To Siberia

(1/15/09) Rep. David Ralston, who set himself up for banishment to the legislative equivalent of Siberia last November with a failed challenge to House Speaker Glenn Richardson, has, indeed, lost his chairmanship of the House Judiciary (Non-Civil) Committee. But where he's going, instead, doesn't appear to be all that cold.

He got the No. 2 spot on the other judiciary committee, right behind Chairman Wendell Willard, and kept his positions as a member of Transportation and Appropriations. However, he did lose his membership on Rules.

The committee lists were made public last night.

In the decades when Democrat Tom Murphy was Speaker, his two unsuccessful challengers also endured a period of punishment. But the steps taken against Ralston seem far less severe at first glance, possibly in keeping with the new, more inclusive image Richardson is cultivating this year. Too, Ralston has made his peace with the man who wields the gavel.
